That looks like a Bob Ross painting with a terrorist in it. How cool.
Read this article by Rolling Stone
I loved how every 7th or 8th paragraph, the writer justified the actions of Omar Khadr as those of a child. Then the story points out that there are a significant number of people in GITMO who are innocent. (which we all know is true) By weaving in this "hey! he isn't responsible for being a kid raised this way" rationale, and then focusing directly on his incessant torture, the writer attempts to illicit a sense of outrage from the reader.
Too bad it's such a weak argument.
I could see this as the closing argument for some wet-behind-the-ears court appointed attorney. This "kid" better hope his legal team has more substance than Rolling Stone, or he's out of luck.
GITMO is the least of our problems with this current administration. You like your civil rights and privacy? Do you like being able to write a magazine that points out the faults of our leaders? Kiss those rights goodbye thanks to this batch of "conservatives" that are too busy playing knee-jerk politics for voters that are too low on the education ladder to see what's happening to them. Call them blue and red states all you like. I prefer to call them Dumb and Dumber. Why hasn't "the base" cried out about this? Oh yeah, they're too busy buying NASCAR merchandise and liberals are too busy whining about it all.
I don't give a rats ass about some Canadian/Afghan child who didn't mean to become a terrorist. I sure as hell don't feel sorry for his continued torture, and yes, I'm fine with the United States Government torturing people. Before our population became the obsessed, nosy-neighbors of armchair policy making, we were fine with the CIA and Military doing what it took to protect us; all while turning a blind eye to what they did to anyone who wasn't American. As long as we were free, that's all that mattered.
Sound nationalistic? Sure. Sound absolute? Definitely. Sound crazy? Crazy like a fox!
Somewhere along the way we lost our balls. Sure, 3000 souls all crying out at once will shake you, but save those brave men and women who fight for us, we're all running scared directly into a police-state of wire taps, soundibtes, and coercion. We're letting a group of cowards dictate that we don't need liberty and freedom for the sake of liberty and freedom. Instead, we need "protection" from the terrorists. Oh, we don't want 9/11 to happen again. That would be too much for us to handle.
Seriously!? Who the hell are we anymore?
How many films, books, plays, and good old fashioned common sense do we need to ignore before we continue down this road? We've been talking about this through most of the 20th century, as a fictional scenario. A "what if" kind of situation. Why are we so emasculated? How many more ways can we let the government into our lives before we see we've gone too far? Sure technology alone could remove all sense of privacy from American life. This information can be obtained by the nefarious, and wreak havoc on our markets as a whole -- but I'll take the identity theft any day over a Republic that has been armed with the power to interfere with my life.
How much do we want to TRUST anyone with that kind of power?
North Korea either just tested a nuke today, or tried to make us think they did. Iran is screaming for our heads, and we've got an entire planet of zealots who want nothing more than our utter destruction...so why are we giving it to them? Where are the red-blooded American men and woman who want to REMAIN American men and women? The more indifferent we are to this, the more vulnerable we are.
There is always a need to challenge our leaders and ride the edge of liberal ideas and progressive thinking:
"That government is best which governs least" - Thomas Paine
Those are the words of a liberal who fueled the American Revolution with his words. This was a radical idea when it came out, and it should be the bedrock of our "liberal" generation today. Sure, there are a lot of things wrong with the GOP. Believe me, I can't stand those guys. The thing is, the rest of the "liberal" country is spreading our national identity across way too much toast. This is not the time to feel sorry for the children of our enemies just because we have the capacity to care.
Iraq is a mistake because we stopped there.
There's a hell of a lot more trouble on the way. We need to be a solid nation with a clear plan on how to take it head-on. America, and the liberty we enjoy, is in jeopardy. If you think I'm giving in to hyperbole, then you're part of the problem. As I watch the talking heads I'm ashamed of how pre-occupied we've become with politics. The enemy is sneaking up, and we're too busy posturing. I remember waking up on September 12th, 2001 and knowing exactly what we needed to do from that day on. Do you remember that clarity of vision? You should try to get back in touch with it.
This has nothing to do with Islam. This has nothing to do with terrorists. This should have nothing to do with politics. This is about someone challenging you and I on the world stage. We're America. We need to wipe those who oppose us, from the face of the planet - and only feel a little bad about having to do it in such a messy way.
We need to do this because we're better. That's right, I said it. We're better. I'll take civil liberties and freedom of speech over lynch-mob beheadings and the stoning of women anyday. We will not overcome religious zealots with diplomacy. These people aren't as lazy and quick-to-forget as we are. They don't have Rolling Stone to occupy their attention.
